Chapter Fourteen

Troy took a few steps back where he could keep out of the way and still get a good look at what was happening. Four girls, each one more beautiful than the other, were standing under a tent a few feet away. They were all wearing short robes that were made out of some silky, shiny material. They listened carefully to a young man with a clipboard, then filed back into the pool house. Not for the first time, Troy wondered what magazine these pictures were for, because he couldn’t imagine all these girls in some kind of horse magazine. Cooper clearly wasn't paying attention when he got the details for this job.

The director – at least Troy assumed it was the director – came out and sat in a tall folding chair. At some invisible signal, everyone sprang into motion. Nick, the guy he met earlier, held up a sign, and Troy realized that in addition to the photographer, another guy was videotaping the shoot.

“American Sports Swimsuit edition photo shoot, day one, video one,” shouted Nick.

It couldn’t be. Troy closed his eyes, then opened them in time to see a woman with a very familiar face step out from under the tent and walk toward Smokescreen. This was the woman he dreamed about last night – and many other nights as well.

He shook his head. “You have got to be kidding me.”

This was definitely karma screwing with him. Last night he slept with Cynthia, not that it was a bad thing, but look who shows up the next morning. Her. The one woman he’d dreamt about making love to.

“Okay Lisbeth” called the director. “Let’s get rid of the robe and get ready to shoot. Arnie? You ready?”

Arnie must be the photographer, Troy realized.

Sam positioned Smokescreen so he stood parallel to the ocean. The horse looked around, obviously bored with it all.

Arnie chose a camera lens from a case and stood so the ocean would be seen behind the horse. As Troy watched, Lis slid the short silk robe off her shoulders and into the hands of a waiting wardrobe assistant.

She was wearing the tiniest bathing suit Troy had ever seen. His heart raced and he swore his blood pressure shot up about a hundred points. If he thought the famous red suit from her first American Sports picture was the ultimate fantasy, he’d seriously misjudged the potential of a bathing suit to cover as little skin as possible. The white top was no more than a strip of fabric down the center of each breast held together by a thin set of straps tied in the back, and the bottom was a navy-blue thong. She was barefoot, and her wavy hair was loose down her back. He let out a deep breath as she moved closer to the horse.

“Where do you want me, Kenny?”

I know where I want you. Troy managed to keep his mouth shut and his thoughts to himself. Barely.

“Let’s start out with a couple of shots of you standing face to face with the horse.
